Reading 03

This week's reading task confused me for a while. We had a lot to go through, with an estimated 3 hours of pure reading, before even going near the blog writing and other tasks? Way too much in my opinion.

The reading goes into detail about annotated bibliographies, I found the video to be very easy to follow and explained everything in terms that I was able to understand. Showing that an annotated bibliography is a lot easier and less daunting than I first thought it would be. The research matrix that we are following in Excel is quite handy for it but I will need to expand each source a lot more for the annotated bibliography. By following the steps in the video and using the three steps, citation, a small reference like the Harvard referencing. Followed by the summary, which is quite self-explanatory, with just 3-4 lines to explain what the source is. The last step is annotation, which is a paragraph explaining the source, why the source is good, and how it related to your research.

The next part was learning about passive vs active reading which are two types of reading strategies that should be employed when doing research. Which one of the strategies you should be using is determined by what you are looking to gain from the reading, and which strategy compliments different types of learning styles.

I also learned there are three "approaches" to reading; pre-reading, reading, and post-reading. The first is skimming over and seemingly reading more passively, although it doesn't specifically say this in the reading.

The second step, reading, seems to be more active reading, along with writing notes along the way, summarising paragraphs in your own words, and other extra things such as diagrams and flow charts. Personally, I think writing small notes, highlighting and summarising things in your own way is a lot more effective than things like making flow charts, and "Determine the significance of conclusions" seems like it's way too much, this doesn't suit my style of learning either.

The last part is about looking back over your notes, writing a short summary of the source, and making sure you understand any confusing parts of the reading.
